LandLogic: Behavioral Health Provider Training for Agricultural Communities

A farmer drives a tractor through freshly plowed rows of soil, creating neat planting lines in a rural field.

At a glance…

  • LandLogic is a clinical training program that equips behavioral health providers with cultural context, alliance-building strategies, and evidence informed interventions adapted specifically for agricultural populations.
  • The program expands the behavioral health workforce’s capacity to deliver culturally responsive care to agricultural producers and families.
  • More than 360 participants have completed LandLogic, including 158 in 2025.

Agricultural communities experience distinctive stressors, strong ties to the land, and cultural expectations that shape behavioral health needs. A systematic literature review on Farmer Mental Health Interventions identified culturally appropriate and available care as a primary driver of agricultural mental health (Younker and Radunovich 2022). LandLogic addresses this need by preparing providers to offer culturally responsive counseling tailored to the realities of agricultural life.

Co-developed by Colorado State University Extension, LandLogic is a three-hour clinical training based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance, Commitment Therapy (ACT) techniques adapted specifically for agricultural populations. The program equips behavioral health providers with cultural context, alliance-building strategies, and evidence informed interventions designed to align with agricultural values and experiences.

Since 2021, the model has undergone continual refinement, incorporating feedback from producers, partners, and participants to ensure relevance and effectiveness. Growing endorsement from agricultural wellness experts and clinicians highlights the value of a therapeutic approach that integrates producers’ deep relationship to the land.

In July 2025 the Colorado Behavioral Health Administration entered a two-year licensing agreement with LandLogic to promote and provide no cost clinical training for up to 250 Colorado licensed behavioral health providers. More than 360 participants have completed LandLogic, including 158 in 2025.

Early evaluation data from 202 participants show strong confidence in applying training concepts:

  • 98.5% of participants agreed they would be able to apply the content from the training in their practice.
  • Of those who have been in their profession for 7 years, 100% report strongly agreeing they would be able to apply the training to their practice.
  • 100% of participants who have mostly agriculture clients strongly agreed they would be able to apply the training to their practice.
  • 98% said it would help build trust with clients.
  • 96% said it would help increase client retention rates.
  • 98% said it would help promote positive outcomes among their clients.
  • 98% said it would help them adapt culturally appropriate clinical practices for members of the agricultural community.

Enhanced pre-test, post-test, and follow-up evaluations led by CSU faculty will further strengthen program evidence and inform continued improvement.

Culturally responsive adaptations to therapeutic evidence-based practices, such as CBT and ACT, are emerging as best practices. LandLogic expands the behavioral health workforce’s capacity to deliver culturally responsive care to agricultural producers and families.

By improving provider confidence, rapport-building skills, and cultural understanding, the program supports more effective mental health care, strengthens client engagement, and contributes to reducing distress and negative health outcomes in agricultural communities.
